Alaska is a awe-inspiring place, due in part to its sheer vastness, but also because of its wilderness and plentiful wildlife. Our tour first takes us several hours into the interior from Anchorage where we look for boreal species like Northern Hawk-Owl, Boreal Chickadee, and Pine Grosbeak. We then make our way to Seward with its typical Pacific Northwest forests, bays and the Kenai Fjords. We will search the waters and its islands for pelagic specialties like the Red-faced Cormorant, Horned and Tufted Puffins, Thick-billed Murres, and Parakeet Auklets. In the deep woods are various specialties of these woods. Steller's Jay, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Varied Thrush -- these are some of our targets there.
We fly to magical Nome with its exceptional resident species as well as the tantalizing possibilities for possible vagrants. During the 4 days there we target Glaucous Gull and Aleutian Tern in coastal areas and Yellow Wagtails everywhere. Golden Plovers (Pacific and American), numerous Long-tailed Jaegers nest on the tundra, as well as Willow and Rock Ptarmigan, Arctic Warbler, Bluethroat, and Northern Wheatear.
